| Frequently Asked Questions |
| Will my insurance cover this procedure? |
Many insurance companies are covering endovenous laser treatment of the vein disease (EVLT) when it is associated with symptoms such as pain, heaviness, fatigue, swollen ankles, etc. As a courtesy to you, our office will make an effort to obtain prior authorization from your insurance company. |
 |
| How quickly can I return to normal activity? |
On the day of the procedure you are encouraged to take several short walks. The next day you should be able to return to normal activity. After 3 days you can resume your normal exercise routine, but cannot use leg-weights for 1 week. |
 |
How many times do I need to come to the clinic? |
First time you need to come for the initial evaluation and Ultrasound examination. During this visit the doctor will be able to diagnose your condition and will answer all of your questions. Some of the insurances require a second visit 6-12 weeks after the initial appointment to evaluate whether conservative treatment was effective to help your symptoms. Conservative treatment consists of frequent leg elevation, avoiding prolonged standing, and wearing compression stockings (30-40 mmHg pressure). If conservative treatment fails, you will be scheduled for the procedure. Finally, 1-2 weeks after the treatment, it is important to come back to our clinic for confirmatory Ultrasound examination to ensure good results. |
 |
What does the procedure involve? |
Once you pick a good time for you to undergo the treatment, you come to the clinic for the procedure. Your doctor will see you and again answer any questions you might have thought of after the initial visit. Then you will receive a mild sedative in form of a pill and your doctor will perform an ultrasound of your veins and will mark them. Next, a nurse will clean the skin of your legs with antimicrobial solution. The doctor, after injecting local numbing medicine in your legs, will perform the laser treatment. Once it is completed, compressing wrap will be applied and you will be able to go home. |
 |
Is the laser treatment painful? |
The procedure is not painful since we provide not only local numbing medicine but also mild sedative for relaxation and comfort. |
 |
Will my varicosities come back in the future? |
After complete treatment recurrence of varicosities is very unlikely. |
 |
| Will my children have varicose veins? |
The varicose disease of the veins is multi-factorial problem. That means that nature “loads the gun” and certain environmental factors “pull the trigger”. Overall, it is believed that there is about 70% probability that your children will have some degree of varicose disease. |
 |
| What should I look for in a physician? |
| Physician’s expertise and experience in the field of vascular surgery matters. Vascular surgeons are physicians who care for patients with diseases that affect the arteries and veins throughout the body. Varicose vein disease can be very complex and each patient is unique. Therefore, it’s important to find a physician experienced in treating the entire spectrum of vascular disease and able to perform percutaneous (i.e. through the skin) as well as precise conventional surgeries. . |
