Trophic ulcers, also known as “venous stasis ulcers”, are an example of complication of venous insufficiency.
They form due to abnormalities in venous circulation, when insufficient veins fail to bring used blood back to the heart. Instead, venous blood does not leave the leg. Over time, such blood stagnation leads to skin malnourishment and formation of expanding non-healing skin lesions, called ulcers, often with secondary infection and other complications. Long standing ulcers can even lead to skin cancer.
