“Edema” is Latin for swelling. It can be caused by many different diseases, including heart, kidneys, liver and endocrine problems.
Venous insufficiency is the most common cause of edema in general population. It forms because high pressure of blood in affected vein forces liquid part of blood, called serum, or plasma, to leak through distended and, therefore, thin wall of the vein. Plasma, consequently, goes into the soft tissue surrounding the vein, and forms edema. Such plasma does not circulate through the soft tissue and, due to its stagnancy, predisposes to infections, which are always very hard to treat.
